Summer Parties: Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato, & Avocado Sandwiches

BLTA We’re in the home stretch for the Fourth of July – it’s only a couple days away! I’ve shared a recipe for Baked Sweet Potato Fries and another for Southwestern Black Bean & Corn Salad, but what are you planning for your main dish? Often the answer is burgers, hotdogs, BBQ, etc. Why not try something a little different this Fourth, but just as classically American – Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato, & Avocado Sandwiches!

Ripe Tomatoes!

These sandwiches are amazing…and it’s all thanks to my secret ingredient. You think the ingredient has something to do with vine ripe tomatoes, don’t you? Well, those are beautiful, but nope! So what is this secret? Two words – lime juice!

It may sound a little odd, but the lime is perfect when squeezed right over the top of the avocado. It can then drip down into the sandwich, but you don’t add enough to make anything soggy. My husband was actually skeptical when he saw me reaching for the lime (he’s not skeptical of me often…especially when I’m cooking…so I was comically surprised!), but as soon as he bit into his sandwich he realized his mistake!

Strangely, my food always seems to disappear before I can even think to get out my camera! 😉 And don’t forget to pause for a moment to truly appreciate what it means to live in a country that values individual freedom so greatly! 

Summer Parties: Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato, & Avocado Sandwiches

The best BLTA ever!


  • 4 slices bread (I used sourdough)
  • 4 slices bacon
  • 1 avocado, sliced into long thing strips
  • 1 large tomato, sliced
  • 2 cups baby lettuce
  • 2 tsp. mayonnaise
  • lime juice, to taste (I used about 1 lime wedge per sandwich. can always add more!)
  • salt & pepper, to taste


  1. Cook bacon according to package instructions to desired doneness.
  2. Toast your bread to desired texture - I prefer mine a little toasted, but not too crunchy. Just toasted enough for it to stand up to all of the juice from the tomatoes!
  3. Spread mayonnaise on 1 side of 2 slices of the bread.
  4. Pile 1 cup of lettuce on each of these two pieces of bread.
  5. Next, add half of the tomato to each of these slices.
  6. Layer the bacon evenly on top of the tomato, dividing it equally between the two sandwich stacks. Top bacon with avocado - use it all! Season both stacks with salt and pepper.
  7. This next step is the most important - squeeze a wedge of lime over the top of the entire sandwich so the juice coats the avocado.
  8. Top both sandwich stacks with the other slices of bread.
  9. Cut sandwiches in half - half a sandwich is one serving, but these are BIG half sandwiches! :)
